Oil tanker sinks in sea near Spain
Updated 19 November 2002, 16.22
The Prestige Oil tanker
An oil tanker has split in two and sunk in the sea near Spain, leaking thousands of tonnes of oil into the water.

It could create one of the worst environmental disasters the world has ever seen.

The back half of the Prestige tanker vanished into the sea earlier today, but now the front has gone down as well.

There were 70,000 tonnes of oil on the tanker, and 5,000 have already leaked out.

If the rest escapes, it could be devastating for birds and the environment.

But there's a chance the oil could stay inside the tanker and sink safely to the bottom of the ocean.

Prestige oil tanker
The tanker is around 150 miles from the Spanish coast, but it's also threatening wildlife in nearby Portugal as well.

All fishing in a 100-mile long stretch of sea near the coast has been banned, and officials are trying to organise the clean-up.

Other European countries have promised to send help.
