UN inspectors go to Iraq to look for weapons
Updated 18 November 2002, 09.05
United Nations
A team of people is heading for Iraq to try and find out if there are any weapons of mass destruction there.

Lots of other countries in the world are worried that Iraq has built these weapons and will use them, even though they are not allowed under United Nations rules.

Iraq says it has not built any of the weapons - which could include nuclear, biological or chemical weapons.

The country says the weapons inspectors will be able to go anywhere they want when the inspections start, maybe as early as next week.

The last inspections were four years ago, and some people think that in that time Iraq will have worked out good ways to hide weapons - if they have got any.

During the last inspection Iraq stopped the inspectors looking where they wanted to, something that won't be allowed this time.

The United Nations Security Council has passed a rule that says if Iraq doesn't get rid of all its weapons there will be "serious consequences".

This could mean there will be a war against Iraq.
