  Silence as world remembers 9/11
Updated 11 September 2002, 19.01

Britain has joined the rest of the world in a minute's silence to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the US last September.

The silence took place at 1.46pm. That's the time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York.

President Bush led the American people in a day of prayer and remembrance travelling between the crash sites in Washington, Shanksville and Ground Zero.

The former mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, began the long and sad task of reading out the thousands of names of those who lost their lives in the attacks.

In England, the Prince of Wales and Prince Harry led the memorial service at St Paul's Cathedral.

They were joined by the country's political leaders and the families of some of the 67 British victims.

During the service thousands of white rose petals were dropped from the roof of the cathedral to mark each of the lives lost on 9/11.

In Australia, more than 3,000 people in red, white and blue tee-shirts turned out on a beach near Brisbane to make a giant American flag.
