Updated 06 September 2002, 09.16

US and UK war planes have bombed an air base in Iraq - in what could be the start of the build-up to a military invasion.

Almost 100 air planes were involved in the attack, which targeted a communication centre.

In itself, this is not an unusual event.

Zones where Iraq is not meant to fly planes were set up after the Gulf War in 1991. Already this year Iraq has been bombed 35 times because it broke into these zones.

But the bombing seems to have been much heavier than normal.

Experts say it could be a strong signal from America to Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein.

The US President, George W Bush, is thought to want to invade Iraq.

He doesn't like Saddam Hussein, and worries that Iraq is building up weapons that could be used to threaten America.

At the moment, many countries around the world are unsure if attacking Iraq is a good idea.

But Tony Blair supports George Bush.

And with the anniversary of 11 September coming up, tensions are much higher than normal.
