Iraqi children living in fear of war
Updated 21 August 2002, 17.16
Ausameh, 11, had family in Iraq
Iraqi children living in Britain have spoken to Newsround about their fears of a war between Iraq and America, and their views on Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

The children are from some of the 150,000 Iraqi families living in the UK, but all have family back in Iraq.

Families live in fear

Ausameh, 11, doesn't think America should attack Iraq: "War is always a bad idea - there's no point to war. Discussing a problem I think is better," he told Newsround.

But he also thinks Saddam is bad: "He took power over Iraq and named himself president. He's meant to be the president and he's killing people in Iraq," he said.

Fourteen-year-old Kamar agrees: "He's awful, one of the biggest terrorists. He's very brutal."

She also explained why people living in Iraq are scared.

"If you don't listen to the rules then you're going to be tortured. A lot of people, they're very scared." said Kamar.

Sarah, 15

Sarah, 15, agreed: "They want him to go but they can't say so because they're too scared for their lives and their families and children."

War is last resort

America fought a war with Iraq over 10 years ago, but conflict could be avoided again if Saddam Hussein lets United Nations inspectors search Iraq for nuclear and chemical weapons.

But it would take a real breakthrough to prevent the war which these children and their families fear so much.

"I think it should be a last resort," said Sarah.
