World's first spy museum opens in America
Updated 18 July 2002, 11.18
The Spy Museum looks at the history of espionage
A lipstick gun, a deadly umbrella and a pipe pistol are just some of the gadgets on display at the world's first International Spy Museum in Washington.

The museum is owned privately but has the full support of former KGB and CIA spy chiefs from Russia and the United States.

Many of the objects on display are from the private collections of former agents and look like they've come straight out of a James Bond Movie.

Which is not surprising, since CIA agents were told to watch the 007 movies for good ideas!

There's even a solar powered tree stump listening device, which was left in woods near a Soviet military base to listen in on their conversations.

James Bond movies have inspired many ideas in the real spying world

The lipstick pistol was issued to Russian KGB agents in the 1960s. It was 4.5mm long and known as the 'kiss of death'.

As well as looking at the gadgets, visitors to the museum can also find out more about the history of spying from Ancient times to the present day.
