Hope fades for Turkey earthquake survivors
Updated 04 February 2002, 11.00
Those made homeless keep warm by a fire
The search for more survivors has been called off in western Turkey after a strong earthquake struck on Sunday.

Hundreds are now homeless in the town of Bolvadin in Afyon province and have had to spend a cold night outdoors.

Soldiers and aid workers are desperately trying to hand out shelter and food.

Aftershocks

At least 45 have been killed in the quake, which reached 6.0 on the Richter scale - the measurement for earthquake strength.

Hundreds of aftershocks are still being felt and some of them have been very strong.

When the main quake struck, people panicked and many jumped out of windows and balconies in fear. Reports say more than 170 have been injured.

Over 150 buildings collapsed in the quake, including the minaret towers of four mosques.

And now rescue workers are warning people not to return to their homes yet as many buildings are still unsafe.
