Suspects must be well-treated, says Straw
Updated 20 January 2002, 16.38
al-Qaeda prisoners at Camp X-Ray at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
The al-Qaeda suspects being held at a US base in Cuba must be treated like human beings, says the UK Home Secretary Jack Straw.

Mr Straw was speaking after photos of the war prisoners at Camp X-Ray in Guantanamo Bay appeared in newspapers around the world.

They were shown kneeling down, handcuffed, wearing leg-irons, masks, earmuffs and heavy gloves.

Human rights

They are there because they were arrested in Afghanistan on suspicion of being involved with the terrorist outfit al-Qaeda.

But some people, like the human rights group Amnesty International, are protesting to the US that the conditions they're being kept in aren't good enough.

There are international laws which say prisoners of war must be treated humanely.

The Red Cross and a team of British officials are visiting the camp to check on conditions there.

The US military insist the men in the pictures had just landed at the base and prisoners were normally free to walk around their cells.
