Taleban's telly ban comes to end
Updated 19 November 2001, 10.34
Mariam Shakebar, 16, presents the first TV programme in Kabul, Afghanistan for five years
A 16-year-old girl has brought TV back to the Afghan city of Kabul after a five-year ban.

The Taleban stopped all TV in Afghanistan when they were in power, and instead forced people to listen to their one-sided radio programmes.

But that all changed just six days ago when the Taleban fled Kabul, after it was taken over by the Northern Alliance, who are backed by America and Britain.

Forbidden to work

Women were forbidden to work
The first TV programmes for five years were introduced by 16-year-old Mariam Shakebar, who wore a brown and cream headscarf.

When she was 11 years-old, Mariam was a popular children's TV presenter in Afghanistan, But she lost her job when the Taleban came to power.

Not only was TV banned, but women were also forbidden to work.

Cartoons

Mariam introduced a selection of programmes including cartoons, interviews, news and prayer readings.

Mariam and her co-presenter, Shamsuddin Hamid, told viewers all types of TV would be shown from now on, and that opinions of all Afghans were allowed to be expressed.
