  Hundreds killed in boat tragedy
Updated 23 October 2001, 08.09
Survivors of Java boat tragedy
Up to 400 people are thought to have died in a boat accident which has been described as "like the Titanic".

Hundreds of immigrants from Iraq were on board the boat which sank off the coast of Indonesia.

It is thought just 44 of them have survived.

Problem

An eight-year-old boy who was rescued said he had lost 21 members of his family.

Another survivor said: "It was just like the film Titanic. Once the problem started, the boat went down almost immediately."

The boat was heading for Christmas Island in Australia, where the immigrants had hoped to claim asylum and make a new life for themselves.
