  Matthew meets Afghan refugee children
Updated 22 October 2001, 20.35
Refugee children
Newround's Matthew Price has travelled to Pakistan to talk to children in refugee camps.

He's staying a couple of miles from the border of Afghanistan. On Monday he travelled to a camp where refugees escaping from Afghanistan live together.

Sneaking over the border

Matthew and local boy
Life is hard in the colony. Samier, who's 12, lives in a house there with seven other families.

Among them are his cousins who've managed to sneak over the border in the last few days. They bought with them a tiny baby who was born around 11 September.

Razia also lives in the colony. She said: "There's lots of bombing in Afghanistan. That's why lots of people are trying to come here.

Strict laws

"Girls in Afghanistan have to obey strict laws. The rulers of Afghanistan, the Taleban, don't let girls go to school."

Another refugee girl told Matthew how she is happy now she doesn't have to wear a burqa - a scarf which covers your face and head.

She said: "Even my 13 year old sister is forced to wear it. It's very difficult to see through, it's hard to manage. Now I don't need it anymore."

They're the fortunate ones - many people stuck in Afghanistan are still desperate to flee.
