The MiP files: How much should teens be paid?
Updated 25 March 2003, 17.44

Each week, we unlock some of the secrets of the most powerful place in Britain - Parliament.

Our Man in Parliament has all the latest info every Tuesday!

You can also ask him questions or get him to ID your MP. Go to the bottom of the page for how.

How much cash do you reckon you'd earn if you got a job when you're 16?

Well, if you're the next David Beckham or Gareth Gates, you'll probably get a fairly big pay packet.

But if you're not a top footie player or singer, you'll have to make do with what your boss decides to pay you.

If you were 18, government rules mean your boss would have to give you 3.80 an hour.

Yet the same rules don't apply for 16 or 17-year-olds.

Seem unfair to you? Well now that's under review and could all change.

I'll let you know what happens.

"I long for the day when animal experiments are a thing of the past and looked back on with as much curiosity as that with which we look back on sending children up chimneys."

- politician Norman Baker is concerned about using animals in experiments

Guess what politicians have been talking about...your school dinners and sports fields.

It's because they are worried about kids putting on weight and getting health problems later in life.

So what are they doing about it?

Well, they say they're spending millions of pounds on making school sport better.

Big money, eh?!

They also say they're going to get healthier food on the menu for school dinners and tuck shops.

Each week our MiP will give you the chance to have your MP identified.

Just send us your name and postcode using the boxes at the bottom and he'll do the rest.

This week, Peter, 10, from Ffos-y-ffin in Wales gets his MP identified.

Name:
Simon Thomas
Age:
38
Where are you from?
Born and brought up in Aberdar, south Wales, now living in Aberystwyth.
Party:
Plaid Cymru (Welsh nationalists)
School nickname:
Crombie

Greatest achievement:
Getting elected, obviously! But also keeping the environment on the Welsh political agenda
Inspiration:
The community traditions of Wales and individuals like Nelson Mandela
Last movie I saw:
Lord of the Rings (Part 1) on video
Football team:
Don't have one, sorry!
MP I admire:
There's lots of good MPs around
Were you interested in politics as a child?
Yes
Why does politics matter?
Politics is just the way society comes to agreement about how to live together and look after each other, it matters a lot for everyone.
What one thing would you change tomorrow?
I'd abolish nuclear energy and create a real green economy.

Peter also asks:

What does my MP do on his days off?
I like to go cycling or walking; spending time with my family on a trip out to a beach or special place.
Would my MP like to become Prime Minister? No, but I'd like Wales to have its own Prime Minister.
Does my MP like being an MP? Yes, it's hard work because people want your attention all the time and it's difficult to live in Ceredigion and work in London, but it can also be great fun.
