It follows newspaper reports that the driver intended to stop his car there because he wanted to commit suicide.

Police said this was a line of inquiry but they would also be examining the car to see if there was another reason for why it was on the level crossing.

The driver was among those who died. A further 70 people were injured.

The train was travelling from London to Plymouth when the collision happened at around 6.15pm on Saturday.

Wreckage

Police have brought in lifting gear to remove around 300 tonnes of wreckage from the track.

The level crossing was not manned.
