  Lizo announces kids' book prize

Newsround's Lizo Mzimba
The winner of one the UK's most biggest awards for children's writing was announced at a ceremony on Friday.

Newsround's Lizo Mzimba revealed A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly had won the CILIP Carnegie Medal.

US born Jennifer Donnelly is quite unknown in the UK, although she's being described as a new literary phenomenon.

She has scooped the Medal ahead of Whitbread Book of the Year winner, Mark Haddon and Whitbread Children's Book of the Year winner David Almond.

Colin Brabazon, Chair of this year's judges said: "This was an incredibly strong and diverse shortlist, but one compelling novel swept all before it."

A Gathering Light is Donnelly's first novel for teenagers, although it proving a popular choice with adults too.

"Winning the UK's CILIP Carnegie Medal means a great deal to me," said Donnelly. .
