  Children told: 'Fruit is cool'
Updated 09 July 2004, 11.50
Sweeties
Kids are being encouraged to swap a packet of sweets for an apple as part of a new campaign that promotes the message that "fruit is cool".

The campaign, by Cape Apples, was launched after a survey revealed that UK kids were spending half of their monthly pocket money on fatty treats.

Most kids said they didn't eat fruit because they didn't like the taste and others said they thought it was uncool.

The sweet amnesty is the first in a series of events to reverse the trend.

Atomic Kitten star Liz McLarnon helped launch the amnesty, joining kids who handed over their sweets at a London school.

Choccie

Research showed that more than 50% of kids admitted to eating up to six packets of sweets, choccie or crisps each week, compared to 36% eating up to six portions of fruit.

But there is some good news - 90% of the kids said they liked fruit. Let's hope they'll like it even more now!
