Sun cream 'fails to protect kids'
Updated 23 June 2004, 08.11
People having fun in the sun
Some sun creams made especially for kids do not offer the protection they claim to on the bottle, experts say.

Spot checks by the Trading Standards Institute revealed that seven out of eight kids' products failed to live up to their sun protection branding.

Under current rules, sun cream makers do not have to outline how well their product protects people. There aren't any guidelines on labelling either.

Now the government is being urged to bring in tighter regulations.

Experts are really worried about the findings because they show kids are not always getting the protection they think they are.

They haven't named and shamed the failing sun creams, but they are warning people to be aware of the problem.

They also urged people to protect themselves against the sun by covering up in T-shirts and hats.
