Headteachers have been warned to keep a close eye on the sun and if it is too bright to think about calling off the trip in case kids get sunburnt.

The schools are being warned because of a link between sunburn at a young age and skin cancer later in life.

Derby City Council said schools should plan trips outside for times when there isn't much sun and it isn't too hot.

Teachers have also been advised to have strong suncream around as well, but they're not allowed to rub it in.

One parent told BBC Radio Derby: "People are going absolutely crackers - teachers should be able to take children out any time of the day or night, whenever they feel like it."

Another parent said: "I always put sunscreen on my little girl anyway, so I am not worried.
