Clean water boost for UK beaches
Updated 28 May 2004, 07.46
More UK beaches are cleaner this year
There's good news if you're planning a swim in the sea over the bank holiday weekend as beaches are getting cleaner.

A study of more than 800 beaches found that more than half of them had really clean water to take a dip in.

The Marine Conservation Society tested the beaches and found that 56% of them were clean enough to make it into their Good Beach Guide - up 4% from 2003.

The biggest improvement was in Scotland, where the number of top beaches almost doubled in a year.

In 2003 just 33 made it into the Good Beach Guide, but this year 56 are found in its pages.

But the MCS still want more done to clean up the seas around the UK, to try and get the remaining 44% of beaches into their guide.
