  Teen loses legs 'train surfing'
Updated 28 September 2004, 13.03
A railway track
A teenager has lost both his legs after taking part in "train surfing" - a really dangerous thing to do.

The 14-year-old boy was hurt after he and several friends jumped on a moving freight train in Cheshire on Friday.

It's thought that they were jumping on the outside of the train to ride it - something known as train surfing.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said that accidents like this happen because young people aren't properly aware of the dangers.

A spokesman for RoSPA said: "From time to time we hear of accidents like this - unfortunately if young people play near railways it often ends in tragedy or serious injury.

"Railways are work areas and are very dangerous.

"We hear of train surfing accidents and it seems that people don't understand the risks involved.

"It's about learning to stop and think before putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

"If you're travelling on a train in any way other than as a passenger, the likelihood is that it will end in disaster."
