  Fewer children studying languages
Updated 25 September 2004, 14.41

The number of teenagers studying foreign languages in England has fallen according to Ofsted, the people who check up on school standards.

Ofsted also found that in one in eight schools in England student achievement in languages was 'unsatisfactory'.

Until last month languages were a compulsory subject and students had to take a GCSE in at least one language.

The government wants to encourage more primary school children to study French, German and Spanish.

Half of all primaries throughout England are now teaching languages.

By 2010 the government says every seven-year-old in England will have the opportunity to learn a language.
