  Schoolgirls join D-Day ceremonies
Updated 05 May 2004, 15.29
Girls from Abbey Grange meet veterans
A group of schoolgirls are to join veterans in celebrations to mark the anniversary of D-Day, when Allied troops invaded Europe in World War Two.

Eleven pupils from Abbey Grange High School in Leeds won a competition to sail to Normandy, France, for the event's 60th anniversary on 4 June.

Zoe Ridsdale, 15, said: "Hearing about history from the people who were there will really bring it home.

"It's really important that we remember what they did for all of us."

On Tuesday the girls met the veterans who will go with them to France, and asked them about their experiences.

Zoe said: "It was amazing that they were only a year or two older than me at the time. I couldn't have done it."

They're planning to use recordings of them on the website they designed to win the competition.
