  Schools becoming 'nut-free zones'
Updated 05 May 2004, 10.38
Peanuts
More and more schools are banning nuts altogether over fears of allergies.

An allergy expert has said that almost every school in Britain has at least one pupil with a nut allergy, about three times more than in the mid 1990s.

Some children are so allergic that they can have a life-threatening reaction if a jar of peanut butter is open in the same room as them.

Six or seven young people die each year from allergies, mostly teens, as young kids' diets are easier to control.

Experts are baffled as to why so many people are becoming allergic to nuts.

Some people are against nut bans in schools. They say kids should learn to avoid nuts themselves for later life.

Teachers now have to deal with the adrenaline injections that people with nut allergies have to carry.

Many are unhappy, because they're worried about being sued if something goes wrong if they inject a child.
