Parents 'to blame for bad pupils'
Updated 03 May 2004, 13.03
Policeman speaks to teenagers
Bad parents were blamed for badly-behaved pupils by an important head teacher on Monday.

David Hart, of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), said many parents let their kids skip school and don't make sure they do their homework.

He also said that parents didn't back teachers up when their kids needed to be punished, and went against teachers.

He said: "Teachers continue to be blamed, unfairly, for under-achievement that is so often home based."

Speaking at a NAHT conference, Mr Hart went on to say that parents who let their kids skip class were sending them towards a life of crime.

"Two thirds of persistent truants have committed a crime," he said.

He thought one way of dealing with all these issues was for parents to sign a "learning contract" to agree what their responsibilities were.

Mr Hart also blamed parents for rising levels of obesity.
