Council to chop down conker trees
Updated 22 September 2004, 14.02
Two conker fans
A council are to chop down a whole line of trees to protect conker-collecting kids from injuring themselves and passing motorists.

South Tyneside District Council is taking the drastic action after a young boy was injured falling out of a tree whilst trying to grab some conkers.

Other kids have been throwing things at branches to try and get conkers down.

The trees have been cut back, but they will be killed off completely and then replaced with a different type.

A council spokeswoman said: "The horse chestnut trees were recently inspected following some incidents involving children throwing objects at the high branches to loosen conkers.

"This is a danger to passing cars. The danger was compounded when a report was received from a nearby school about a child falling from one of the trees narrowly missing a steel girder."
