  Government plans fireworks curfew
Updated 25 April 2004, 11.44
Fireworks on sale
People who set off fireworks after 11pm could soon face serious punishments if government plans go ahead.

Ministers want to bring in a national 11pm to 7am curfew when fireworks would be banned as part of a crackdown on anti-social behaviour.

Other measures include putting a limit on how noisy fireworks can be. Anyone breaking the law could be fined 5,000 or face six months in jail.

The curfew would be extended to 2am on dates like Diwali or Guy Fawkes night.

Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said: "Fireworks can be fun, but when they get into the hands of irresponsible hooligans they cause a real disturbance."
