  Parents want school weapon checks
Updated 10 September 2004, 09.07
Knives
Parents want strong action to stop weapons and drugs getting into schools, according to a new survey.

Random searches were backed by 90% of the 1,000 parents who took part in a survey by teachers' paper the Times Educational Supplement.

It found 80% said pupils who sold drugs should be expelled, and 71% said kids who carried knives should be expelled.

Fears about school safety were raised by the stabbing of Luke Walmsley outside a classroom in November 2003.

Alan Pennell, 16, was convicted of killing the 14-year-old in July.

The poll also quizzed parents about other issues.

It found more than a third of parents say their kids are bullied at school, but 59% think the bullying is handled well by the school.
