Fresh effort to ban fox hunting
Updated 08 September 2004, 19.59
Fox hunters
A new effort to ban fox hunting in England and Wales is set to go before MPs, the government has announced.

A vote on the issue could he held within days but, even if the law gets the go-ahead, it will not come into force for two years.

Ministers say this is to give hunt workers time to find other employment and to re-home the dogs involved.

The House Of Lords has blocked a ban in the past but the government may use special powers to get the ban through.

It could do this by using the Parliament Act, which forces the House of Lords to accept what the House of Commons has decided.

A date for the issue to be debated in the House Of Commons will be announced on Thursday.

Vicious

Hunt supporters have attacked the move as a "vicious attack on families across the country".

The League Against Cruel Sports said it was "the high point of our 80-year campaign to expose fox hunting as a cruel sport and to get it banned".
