Year 11s paid to stay at school
Updated 19 April 2004, 09.40

About half of England's under-16s will be able to get cash in return for staying on at school from September.

The new scheme is aimed at those with families who have lower incomes.

It means that some under-16s could be paid up to £30 a week, which would go straight into bank accounts.

The government said the idea, costing £500,000 million a year, will encourage teens to stay on at school or college. The UK has one of the worst records for keeping teens at school after 16.

Fact File
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Families with less than £30,000 a year: £10 a week
Families with less than £20,000 a year: £20 a week
Families with less than £10,000 a year: £30 a week
Since 1999, 120,000 pupils have tested out the "earn as you learn" scheme around the country.

The trials made 6.9% more boys stay at school, and 5.9% more girls.

In the scheme, there will be no dosh for anyone who bunks off lessons.

Year 11 pupils will have to apply for the cash before it starts in September, and the amount they get will be worked out for them.
