"It was varied. There are kids who can't dance so well, but who may have that special quality that we're looking for. They have all coped really well with the audition."

The musical will open for preview showings in Newcastle later this year, with the West End production kicking off in early 2005.

Intense

Several Billys and Michaels are needed because kids can only work a limited number of hours.

The hopefuls who make it through the audition will go on an intense training course before the show rehearsals start in September.
