Search for teen UK spelling champ
Updated 03 April 2004, 11.29
A national spelling competition is being launched
A new TV show will lead the search for the UK's top young "spelling idol".

And it could be you because the BBC show, called Hard Spell, aims to find the best speller in the country aged between 11 and 14.

There will be competitions in schools with the winners competing in nine regional events in October. Kids taught at home will also be able to enter.

The idea behind the show comes from the US, where millions watch a similar show called the Spelling Bee every year.

There was even a film made about the competition called Spellbound that has won lots of awards.

TV cameras will be at heats and will follow the lives of some of the children all the way to the final.

Some teachers aren't sure the contest will be a good thing for the children, but Schools Minister Steven Twigg reckons it's a good idea.

He said: "Anything which helps raise the awareness of the hard work our pupils put into spelling is a good thing."
