  Breakfast cereals 'bad for you'
Updated 31 March 2004, 17.38
Cereal
Big brand breakfast cereals that contain too much sugar, salt and fat were named and shamed on Wednesday.

Campaigners looked at 100 cereals and compared what they found with advice from the Food Standards Agency on what was bad for people.

They found 85 brands contained lots of sugar - they said Nestle Lion Cereal had as much as a bar of chocolate!

They said adverts for the cereals, and other unhealthy foods, should be restricted during kids' TV.

Fact File
Named and shamed (per 100g)
Nestle Lion Cereal: 0.75g salt, 13.7g fat, 35.9g sugar
Kellogg's Frosties Turbos: 1.5g salt, 1.5g fat, 40g sugar
Nestle Cookie Crisp: 1.5g salt, 2.9g fat, 41.3g sugar
Nestle Golden Grahams: 2.5g salt, 3g fat, 32g sugar
Kellogg's Frosties Chocolate: 1.63g salt, 4.5g fat, 41g sugar
They also recommended that the government should set up a group to oversee the healthiness of Britain's food, called the Nutrition Council.

There were also calls for supermarkets to clearly label which foods are high in sugar, fat and salt.

Obesity, or being dangerously overweight, has recently come out as Britain's biggest health problem.

Experts say it causes 30,000 deaths a year.
