Call for chewing gum price hike
Updated 19 August 2004, 15.06
Environmentalists want to see the price of chewing gum raised to as much a 3 a packet
Environmentalists want to see the cost of chewing gum raised to as much a 3 a packet to cover the cost of cleaning it off the streets.

The money used to clear up the mess usually comes out of council tax paid by local residents.

But in Lambeth, London, evironmentalists think chewing gum makers should pay towards the cost.

There, the estimated cost of cleaning up just one packet of gum is 7.27 which adds up to around 60,000 a year.

Councillor Clare Whelan is leading the campaign to rid Lambeth's streets of gum.

She said: "By increasing the price of a packet of gum, manufacturers will be covering the cost of cleaning and consumers will think twice before buying and thoughtlessly littering the streets with this sticky mess."

Gumbusting van

To tackle the problem, Lambeth has a new 'gumbusting' van which removes single spots of gum.
