  UK fry-up facing 'eggs-tinction'
Updated 27 March 2004, 12.39
Fried brekkie
The great British fry-up may soon be off the menu.

According to a survey, Britons are too busy to whip up their eggs and bacon in the morning.

Just 1% of the population now start their day with a fry-up compared with half of all Britons in 1958.

This is good news for health campaigners who have long argued that the fat and salt content of fried breakfasts are adding to the UK's obesity problems.

Bacon and eggs

Despite the findings, Britons still eat 450,000 tonnes of bacon a year, 5,000 tonnes of sausages and millions of eggs.

The full English Breakfast started in the Victorian times, when bacon, eggs and sausages were served with toast and marmalade and cereal.
