  Pool bans 'dangerous' backstroke
Updated 22 March 2004, 20.24
Backstroke
Swimmers have been banned from doing backstroke at a pool in Blackburn.

The council which runs the pool is worried that swimmers doing the stroke will injure themselves or other people, so it's been banned at peak times.

Council officials have urged people who want to do backstroke to visit Daisyfield Swimming Pool "at quieter times of the day".

Last year, a water polo team were banned from the pool over fears that stray balls were a danger to swimmers.

A spokesman for the Royal Society For The Prevention Of Accidents said the ban was "perhaps going too far".

"What we need to do is encourage people to be more considerate of other swimmers," he added.

Basic skill

A spokesman for the Amateur Swimming Association said: "Backstroke is one of the basic skills of swimming.

"Collisions do occur, but I've never heard of anyone being seriously injured."
