  Rings fans opt for Elvish lessons
Updated 04 March 2004, 15.15
The ring
It might be completely made up, but that hasn't stopped kids at one school learning Elvish, a language JRR Tolkien invented for the Lord of the Rings.

Turves Green Boys' Technology College in Birmingham is giving after-school classes in Sindarin, a language used by Elves for every day conversations.

Teacher Zainab Thorp started the classes when interest in Elvish grew after the success of the films.

She also said the lessons helped the boys "boost their self-esteem."

Fact File
Some "useful" Sindarin words
man = adan
woman = firiel
elf = edhel
dwarf = naug
house = car
me = nin
you = le
When he died, Tolkien had only invented around 350 words in Sindarin, so experts have had to work together to make more.

Mrs Thorp said: "We have to be very careful to use words properly, as Sindarin was invented by Tolkien and we should show it respect."

Tolkien based the language on the sounds of Welsh, which he heard as a boy.
