  English streets covered in litter
Updated 23 February 2004, 08.06
Chewing gum is all over English streets
Streets in England are covered in fast food litter and chewing gum according to a new survey.

It found that almost 95% of the 10,000 town centre streets looked at in England had chewing gum stuck to them.

The Keep Britain Tidy study also discovered that the amount of rubbish left behind by fast food fans has jumped 12% in the last year.

There was some good news though, with 27% less dog mess on the streets than last year's survey found.

People not chucking their litter in bins is a big part of the problem, but the group behind the survey, Encams, also want councils to do more cleaning.

They also said councils should think much harder about how and when they clean the streets, suggesting they do more of it at night when there is more litter.
