Henry VIII bent it like Beckham
Updated 18 February 2004, 09.50
Was Henry VIII a footy fan?
King Henry VIII - famous for having six wives and having two of them beheaded - may have been a bit of football star.

People looking through records of his clothes have discovered he had a pair of football "shoes" in his kitbag.

Experts are surprised that the king played football because back then it had few rules and was really violent.

The boots cost four shillings, which was a lot of money then, and would have been really strong to try and protect him from getting bad foot injuries.

The king was a big shoe fan, also having special pairs for jousting, and sometimes buying as many as 30 pairs at a time.

What makes the king owning boots even weirder is that he banned football in 1548, as he thought it encouraged people to fight with each other.
