  Parents fined for kids' truancy
Updated 27 February 2004, 10.43
Truants
Parents of kids who skip school can be fined up to £100 from Friday in a scheme based on parking tickets.

It's part of a package of new rules in the Anti-Social Behaviour Act aimed at badly behaved kids' parents.

Parents could also be asked to get advice or go on courses in how to deal with their children's behaviour if they continue to cause problems.

Around 50,000 children play truant every day, and half of those are with a parent or another adult.

About a fifth of secondary school children play truant at some point.

A survey of head teachers said only 12% of them would use the fines.

Another report said most parents did not think prosecuting parents would stop truancy.

The Act also applies in Wales, but the Welsh Assembly has said they will not use the on-the-spot fines.
