Calls to help fighting in Haiti
Updated 26 February 2004, 14.51
Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide
Countries from around the world are being asked to help stop fighting in Haiti after trouble broke out over who should be running the country.

The fighting started when people began to suspect the Haitian president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, may have got into power through unfair elections.

Now no-one's too sure who's running the country, and law and order has broken down in the capital Port-au-Prince

A man called Guy Philippe is leading a group of rebels against the President.

People are scared

Lots of people are scared by the disruptions and are trying to leave the country.

Map of Haiti
Food warehouses, car dealers and restaurants in the capital have all been looted and some are reporting that they are being robbed as they try to escape over the borders.

Countries seem to be reluctant to get involved because the situation in Haiti is really complicated.

But the United Nations and the permanent council of the Organisation of American States have agreed to hold urgent discussions on the situation in Haiti later on Thursday.
