  Doctors demand action on obesity
Updated 11 February 2004, 08.58
Obese man
Expert doctors say something must be done straight away about obesity.

Leading doctors from three medical colleges say the government, the food industry and other doctors should work together to solve the growing problem.

Obesity, or being very overweight, can cause health problems like heart disease and diabetes.

They warn that unless something is done very quickly, at least a third of adults, a fifth of boys and a third of girls will be obese by 2020.

They think the government should start a campaign to teach people about healthy eating.

The also say that ways of producing and selling healthy foods should be investigated.

They admit that some ideas, like stocking vending machines in schools with fruit, were catching on.

But Professor Sian Griffiths, from the Faculty of Public Health, said: "Whatever we are doing, it isn't enough."
