Teenagers who suffer from eating disorders are recommended for special treatment under new guidelines issued by a health watchdog.

Experts have called for greater awareness to be made of eating disorders among young people.

They also call for treatment of teenagers to involve parents, close family members and carers.

The number of teens affected by eating disorders has been rising in recent years.

Eating disorders can affect people as young as eight, and it is estimated that there are over one million people in the UK with eating disorders.

Bulimia and anorexia are particularly likely to affect children, where half of all sufferers are teenage girls aged between 13 - 19.

TV presenter Gail Porter suffered from anorexia for 10 years which she says damaged her body permanently and as a result, has to take medicine for the rest of her life.

Around 1,000 children and teenagers ring ChildLine every year because of eating disorders.
