Plans for monkey testing lab axed
Updated 27 January 2004, 08.11
Protesters don't want animal testing
Plans to build a special laboratory that would have carried out experiments on monkeys have been thrown out.

Cambridge University was going to spend millions on the centre, but has now decided it would be too expensive to build - mainly because of protesters.

The University thought it would cost too much to keep the building safe from people who may have protested outside.

The protesters will be happy, but people who think the research could have been very important won't be.

The scientists were going to use the monkeys to test treatments for a number of brain diseases.

Two animal rights groups tried to get the centre banned in the courts, but the Prime Minister Tony Blair and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott decided it could go ahead.

The University said that even though the centre would have cost millions, it was the cost of keeping it safe that really put them off.
