  Have an eco-friendly Christmas!
Updated 24 December 2003, 10.11
The National Christmas Tree lights up the Ellipse in Washington
Christmas tree lights look great but the festive season can be really bad for the environment.

So the Co-operative Bank wants us to think green and has drawn up a list of tips for an eco-friendly holiday.

For instance, turning off fairy lights overnight would save loads of electricity and make your parents' bills cheaper!

And switching off the TV, DVD, and digibox instead of leaving them on standby is much greener.

Fact File
Eco-tips
Plant rooted Christmas tree in your garden to help offset CO2 gases
Turn Xmas lights off overnight or when you're not home
Turn TV/video/DVD off completely, don't leave on standby
At night, draw curtains to keep heat in the room
Helping with cooking? Leave oven door closed & save energy

During winter alone, the average house in the UK switches their lights on for an extra five hours a day because it's so dark.

Global warming is caused mainly by carbon dioxide emissions pumped into the atmosphere and 25% of UK emissions comes from our households.
