Summer camp plan for all children
Updated 15 November 2003, 13.03
You'll get out and about at the camps
Every child in the UK could get the chance to go to a summer camp in the future as part of a new plan.

The government tried the scheme out this year, and it was such a success that all kids between the ages of 11-14 could get at least a one-week break.

The Times newspaper reckons the scheme could be working by 2006, and there may places for as many as 600,000 children.

Loads of kids go to summer camps in the US every year, where they do lots of sport and team-building exercises.

Sport will be a big part of the camp
The government think it'll cost around £150m, and plan to use money from the national lottery to pay for it.

The reason they're spending so much money is that they want kids from any background to be able to go, not just rich ones.

The Education Department hope the camp places will make children more keen to go to school and encourage them to do more exercise.
