  Poll uncovers friendship secrets
Updated 28 November 2003, 11.58
A group of mates having a chat
You can expect to make 363 mates during your life but you'll only be able to call six of them your true friends, a survey has found.

Ten thousand people were quizzed to find out how we make and break friends.

The results showed that most of us will end up with a circle of about 30 close friends, with six of them being the ones we tell our innermost secrets to.

The poll also revealed that many people keep in touch by text and e-mail rather than by talking to their mates.

These mates have been described as "silent friends" because we rarely chat to them and hardly ever see them.

The survey, carried out by MSN Messenger, also revealed how often we see our mates.

It seems women are more sociable - seeing their friends every 3.5 days, while men catch up with their mates every five days.
