  Truants get 'flexi-time' lessons
Updated 27 October 2003, 20.14
Truants will be able to choose their school hours
Kids who bunk off school are getting the chance to do flexible hours in a scheme aimed at stamping out truancy.

Schools in Southend, Essex, are giving kids the chance to do "flexi-time" by putting on lessons after school hours, the Telegraph newspaper reports.

Flexi-time is favoured by many office workers because it gives them the chance to pick and choose their hours.

Education bosses say the flexi-time lessons will help truants make up lost hours and regain their confidence.

The classes will be offered to kids with attendance rates of less than 85%.

They will focus on basic skills.

Embarrassed

They're aimed at helping kids who would feel embarrassed about asking questions in bigger classes.

Bullied kids who don't want to be around other pupils are also being encouraged to go along.

Last year, 4,000 kids in Southend played truant for at least one half day, the Telegraph said.

A recent truancy sweep in the town showed a third of kids didn't have a reason for being off school and that, of these, more than 60% were with their parents.
