Updated 01 September 2003, 14.14
Headteacher Colleen McCabe stole £500,000 from her school
A senior school headteacher who stole half a million pounds from her school has been sent to prison for five years.

Loads of Colleen McCabe's former pupils turned up to see her being sentenced at London's Southwark Crown Court.

She had been found guilty of stealing £500,000 from St John Rigby College in Bromley, Kent, at an earlier hearing.

She used the cash to pay for a luxury lifestyle.

She bought loads of designer clothes and make-up, spending a massive £7,000 just on shoes.

She also used the money for posh holidays, including trips on a famous luxury train called the Orient Express.

The school struggled to cope as McCabe kept on spending its money.

Fact File
What did she spend?
£7,000 on shoes
£836.25 on a posh hotel
£1,500 on two visits to a top restaurant
£1,500 on theatre trips
£112 on a pair of sunglasses

There weren't many books in the library, and the teachers were forced to clean their own classroooms.

McCabe got caught when the school was put under the control of new officials.

They looked at the school's spending records and raised the alarm.

McCabe was meant to be sentenced on 22 August, but she didn't turn up at court.

Police made sure she turned up for Monday's sentencing by arresting her and keeping her in the cells until she had to go to court.
