  Circle older than Stonehenge discovered
Updated 28 August 2003, 18.43
The circle overlooks the standing stones of Callanish - seen here
An ancient stone circle which is older than Stonehenge has been discovered on a Scottish island.

The circle had been buried for more than 3,000 years but a team of archaeologists have just uncovered it.

It's on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides on a site which is already famous for its history.

The new circle - which has been named Na Dromannan - overlooks the Standing Stones of Callanish.

It's thought it collapsed because it was built on an unsteady surface of rocks.

The stones were found lying broken where they fell.

Some of them originally measured four metres long and the stone circle was pretty big at 30 metres wide.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is at the other end of Britain - in Wiltshire in southern England.

It is thought to have been built in about 2000 BC.

It has puzzled archaeologists for centuries, but it's thought it was used to watch the movements of the sun and the moon.
