Sun lotions 'fail to protect us from cancer'
Updated 29 September 2003, 17.56
People having fun in the sun
Sunscreen lotions may not be as effective as we think in protecting us against cancer, according to a study by British scientists.

They carried out tests using three well-known high-factor lotions with UVA rays like those which come from the sun.

Fact File
Skin cancer facts
There are 65,000 new cases in the UK each year
The number of cases has doubled since the early 1980s
More Britons die from skin cancer than Australians
Greater awareness of the disease means that survival rates are getting better

They found that the lotions stopped the skin from burning, but failed to prevent the rays from going through the skin.

When the rays go through the skin, they can damage our DNA, which can cause cancer.

They say that further research is now needed to see if any other creams on the market are more effective.

Cover up

They told people that the safest way of keeping out the sun's rays was to cover up.

A skin cancer expert backed them up, saying: "People should stick on a hat, a t-shirt and stay in the shade."
