Our kids are overweight, say 25% of mums
Updated 23 September 2003, 22.02

More than a quarter of mums think their kids are overweight, a survey has found.

Many of them have asked doctors for advice because they're worried about their kids' weight.

Fatty foods are making kids put on weight

Doctors say that the mums' views tie in with national statistics, which show that around 25% of kids are overweight.

The survey results have been released during National Body Image Week, which Newsround is focusing on with a series of special features.

The research was carried out by magazine Woman and the National Obesity Forum.

It said the main reasons for kids getting too big were:

  • Lack of exercise at school
  • Parents being too worried to let their kids play outside
  • More kids spending more time watching TV and playing computer games

The survey revealed that more than half of the UK's kids have a computer, TV or games console in their room.

Nutrition

Dr Ian Campbell of the National Obesity Forum said kids need to think more about their health.

"If we can encourage good nutrition and physical activity, the weight issue will often look after itself," he said.
